Have you ever had a moment that shifted your entire perspective? For Derrian Fletcher, Head of School at Rock Up Arrows Christian School, that moment came in her child’s public school classroom. It was the catalyst that, combined with a heartfelt dream shared with her late uncle, led her to launch a brand-new Christian school in rural Missouri. Fletcher’s journey is a powerful reminder that sometimes the biggest callings start with a simple, personal need.
The Spark That Ignited a Dream
Fletcher’s path to founding a school began with a classic parental concern. After an inappropriate movie was shown to her first-grader, she realized she couldn’t control the environment and influences her children were exposed to, even in a small, conservative public school. This ‘eye-opener’ led to a conversation with her uncle about homeschooling and what a church-based program could look like. Tragically, he passed away just two months later, but the dream they shared became the driving force behind Rock Up Arrows, turning a personal vision into a powerful mission.
When a Community Says ‘Yes’
While many school startups face hurdles with funding and facilities, Fletcher’s story is one of incredible community support. Her local church and its elders embraced the vision wholeheartedly. ‘We’ve always wanted to serve the school,’ they told her, ‘How can we support you?’ This support wasn’t just verbal; the church built a new addition to their facility to house the school, providing ample classroom space. Families and donors rallied, many from the church and surrounding congregations, eager to invest in the cause of Christian education and help bring her and her uncle’s vision to life.
Hands-On, Life-Focused Learning
Rock Up Arrows isn’t your typical five-day-a-week school. Operating on a hybrid model, it focuses heavily on life skills and nature. Students get hands-on experience with activities that aren’t always possible in a traditional setting. They learn to can apple butter from scratch, study the corn harvest and its many uses, and conduct outdoor science experiments. By prioritizing tangible skills and time in ‘God’s nature,’ Fletcher has created a learning environment where education is a vibrant, real-world experience.
Derrian Fletcher’s journey from a concerned parent to the founder of a thriving micro-school is a testament to faith and community action. When asked for one final piece of advice for other school leaders, her message was clear and powerful:
“Trust God to work through your limitations. You think you can’t, but God can.”
Her story is a beautiful illustration of that very principle, proving that with a clear purpose and a supportive community, you can build something truly special.
