Shoutout for This Week: The L.E.A.R.N. Methodology: Leadership and Life Lessons with Jim Carbaugh

A leader with a mission. Jim Carbaugh has spent over 35 years in education. He has worked as a teacher, principal, and now as CEO of All Points Leadership. He is also a TEDx speaker and author. Carbaugh’s passion is helping schools create a culture where students and staff feel respected, supported, and motivated.

The LEARN Method

Carbaugh’s work centers on the LEARN method, a set of five simple rules he learned from his grandfather:

  • Listen – Pay attention to others and yourself.
  • Ethics – Do what is right and follow your values.
  • Attitude – Keep a positive outlook, even when things are hard.
  • Respect – Treat others the way they want to be treated.
  • No – Understand that “no” can guide you, not stop you.

He first used LEARN in his classroom to set clear expectations for students. Later, as a principal, he used it to shape the climate of his entire school.

Turning Values Into Action

Carbaugh found ways to make LEARN more than words on a poster. He gave out “LEARN shirts” to students who showed the values. Each shirt color matched one of the five rules. Over time, these shirts became a symbol of pride in the school.

He also created student awards for each value—recognizing not only high grades but also positive actions and good character. This focus helped lower behavior problems and encouraged more students to take part in building a positive school culture.

Inspiring Other Educators

Today, Carbaugh works with schools and educators across the country. He shares the LEARN method through coaching, speaking events, and his book The Shop Secret: Learn What Pap Knew. His goal is simple—help every school leader create a safe, respectful place where students can succeed.

Carbaugh’s message is clear: strong schools start with strong values, and it only takes five to make a big difference.
