Jaclyn Loween never planned to be a head of school. But when the opportunity came, she stepped up with courage and a servant’s heart. Today, she leads Alexandria Community Christian School in Minnesota with bold ideas and deep faith.
From International Teacher to Local Leader
Loween’s journey began with a passion for teaching. She and her husband spent seven years in South Korea, teaching and caring for students at an international school. After moving back to Minnesota, she earned her master’s degree and looked for new ways to serve.
Though she wasn’t planning to work in administration, she said “yes” when her local Christian school needed leadership. Her heart for students—and her willingness to follow God’s lead—opened the door.
Rethinking How Small Schools Can Work
When she took over as Head of School, Loween inherited a big challenge: low enrollment and a limited budget. But instead of trying to do things the old way, she tried something new.
She built a flexible team of part-time teachers and community professionals, replacing full-time staff. This new model allowed the school to offer more electives and involve experts from outside the classroom—without breaking the budget.
Now, the school serves more students than before, and kids get a chance to learn from people with real-world experience.
Building on Values and Faith
One thing Loween cares deeply about is values. She helped the school define five core values—and then worked to make sure those values showed up in daily life. Students talk about them. Teachers use them to guide decisions. Even the board uses them to shape the future.
As Loween says, “The values are the boss—not me.”
She brings this same values-based approach to her home life. Her family makes big decisions by asking, “Does this align with our values?” That same mindset now helps her lead her school with purpose and clarity.
Collaboration Over Competition
Loween also believes schools are stronger when they work together. That’s why she started meeting with leaders from two other Christian schools in her town. Instead of staying in silos, they now talk, share ideas, and even team up on service projects.
“It’s not just about helping each other,” she says. “It’s about helping students have a better future.”
Faith-Filled Leadership That Lasts
Loween’s story is a reminder that small schools can do big things—especially with faith, creativity, and the right values. She continues to grow as a leader through time in prayer, Scripture, and the support of her community.
As she says often, “Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders.” And thanks to leaders like her, the future looks bright.
