Shoutout for This Week: Dave Buckles on Turning Debt Into a Christian School Miracle

When Dave Buckles stepped in as President of Foundation Academy in Winter Garden, Florida, the school was facing significant challenges. Enrollment was low, tuition payments were behind, and the future looked uncertain. But Buckles saw more than problems—he saw a mission field.

A Surprising Journey to Education

Before leading a school, Buckles worked in construction and leadership development. In 2014, his pastor called for help when the school faced serious maintenance and financial issues. He fixed a costly problem for a fraction of the price—and soon felt called to stay. What began as a small favor turned into a God-given opportunity to serve full-time in education.

From Struggle to Success

When Buckles started, Foundation Academy had about 565 students and a $6 million budget. Today, the school serves over 1,400 students across three campuses with a $25 million budget. He credits this growth to strong teamwork, clear processes, and trusting God’s plan. “I just applied what I knew about leadership—find great people, trust them, and build together,” he says.

Building a Culture That Lasts

Buckles believes that everyone—teachers, staff, and parents—should have a voice. He leads with humility and humor, encouraging open communication and care for one another. Under his leadership, Foundation Academy has developed a joyful, Christ-centered culture that welcomes every family with warmth and purpose.

Faith First, Always

Named one of Central Florida’s Top CEOs by the Orlando Business Journal, Buckles still defines success differently. “It doesn’t matter how many buildings we build or how strong the finances are,” he says. “If we don’t share the Gospel and lead children to Christ, we’re missing the point.”
Buckles’ story is a reminder that great schools are built on faith, people, and purpose—not just plans.
